Freiburg in southern Germany is close to the Swiss and French borders, almost entirely surrounded by mountains and hills and at the gateway to the Black Forest region. The city is around 900 years old and was initially a small market town, a result of its proximity to trading routes. Now a university city, it has a population of over 200,000. Its picturesque, historic old-town centre is laced with streams and romantic lanes. The lively city with its wine taverns, restaurants and jazz culture welcomes about half a million visitors every year.
